Class Art

The children have taken artistic photographs of things around our school.  They have focussed on balancing the object within the frame.

We have just finished our fantastic self portraits, everyone gave it a great shot and we turned out with a big range of pictures. We began by having a photo of ourselves and we studied the main features of our faces.  We drew a basic outline of our faces on paper and began painting our faces, this is where we ran into problems. It was difficult trying to match the right skin and hair colour and trying to get a good shaped nose. Tylo's portrait turned out really well because he was very good at painting eye lids and so his eyes didn't have that shocked look that some of the others did.  His painting got put on the cover of the school newsletter. The two girls in our class with glasses, Louise and Kimberley, had to draw them on with pencil at the end when their portraits were finished as the skinniness of the frames would have been too hard to paint, but they also turned out great.  It was difficult showing the difference with parts that were all of the same colour such as your nose, ears and neck and where they met the face.  Most visitors to our classroom can pick out who the painting is of so that must be a good sign that we have done a good job.  In the end everyone's portraits turned out great, each with their own special touch.

ABSTRACT ART
Mrs Wichman showed us some abstract paintings by various artists.  We discussed how they got the different textures and 3-d type effects.  We looked at what we liked about their work and how we could adapt it for ourselves.  The task was to create a pastel abstract piece and to not have any actual objects, they needed to be design only.  We talked about the colours and how they have blended them in to each other and how the artist has used lighter and darker tones of colours and chosen colours that work well together.  The first step in our own paintings was to draft our basic ideas onto our paper.  We had scrap paper where we tested out how different colours work together when they are blended in and we practised pastel techniques.  Many of us created our art around a different theme.  I found it challenging to blend using smudging as some colours would show stronger than others and then you had to add more of a certain colour and it was a bit of a juggle to get it right.  Pastel is tricky to work with especially if you get it on your fingers and you touch your painting it can affect the colour.  We are all really proud of our pieces, enjoyed doing them and are surprised at how they've all turned out completely different.
