Swimming Sports
Swimming sports is one of Mangorei School's annual events that the Year 4's and up compete in. We went to the Highlands Intermediate swimming pool at 12:30pm and went through until 3:00. The strokes that you could choose from were freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.  You also had the choice of doing a length or a width.  There was  also the medley which was really challenging for most who entered especially the lengths. You could decide between competitive and non competitive options for the lengths.   Competitive events earned us CV points and a chance to represent our school at interschools events.  Everyone came in their house colors and house points were given out for placings in races, for supporting each other and wearing our sun hats.  The winning house was Burgess.  The best swimmers from each house group competed in a relay race at the end of the day, our house captains had to make sure they were watching the races carefully as it was up to them to choose who was in the relay team. It was great fun and everybody participated and enjoyed themselves. We couldn't have done it without the transport from the parents and their support.  We were lucky to have a nice sunny day for it and it turned out really well.  We also couldn't have done it without Mrs Leach organising the day.  Overall we had a fantastic time and it was all worth it.

Tech
At 8:30 the bus leaves our school gate to go to Devon Intermediate for Tech.
We have four subjects woodwork, food tech, music and metal and materials.
We will tell you about these subjects.....
Woodwork: Our woodwork teacher is Mr Pollard, we make sliding lid boxes when we are year 7s and clocks as year 8s. We learn to use a lot of different varieties of machines and basic daily tools that we need to know how to use for our future development.  We learn how to give things a go and face our fears by using the huge scary saws.  We get to use other equipment like nail guns and planes.  We think the sanding machine is really awesome because you put a piece of wood against it and it sands all the edges and it becomes really smooth.
Food Tech:  The teacher is Mrs Bold.  We learnt how to separate an egg into the yolk and whites, which is really hard because you keep breaking the yolk and it goes into the whites.  I wasted four eggs by doing that.  We learnt how to chop onions up properly and we all cried, not because we couldn’t do it, but because of the juice affecting our eyes.  So far we have made spaghetti bolognaise, bread cases, a mashed potato dish and muesli bars.  (Mrs W has only sampled Kimberley’s muesli bar, what about the rest of you!).
Metal and materials:  The teacher for this class is Mr Cooksley.  You get to make pen holders for your desk (Mrs W gets annoyed by them as they always get knocked off desks!).  You can make some electronic pictures with LEDs to light up parts of it.  You make dog-tags with your name printed on it for your school bags or key rings.  We have to learn how lock a piece of metal in and then use a bending machine.  There is a room that has spray paint and where you can spray your work and also a room that has computers and you can print off stickers to put on the thing you’ve made.
Music:  We have got a new teacher this year called Mrs Avery.  You learn to play the ukulele, about percussion and to write songs.  The most tricky part of writing a song is getting the tune and the bass of the song.
We get the bus back to school afterwards by about 11 o’clock.  It is a great learning experience for us and we look forward to getting closer to finishing things each time.  We like Tuesdays!

Beach Education-February
We were lucky enough to take part in the Beach Education Programme last Monday run by Surf Lifesaving New Zealand.  It was a great day, we were thankful for the weather and had fantastic parent support.  We were given a tour of the surf club and looked at all their equipment and were told what they used it for.  The highlight of the day was the beach activities where we were learning to carry out tube rescues, use the body boards and surf run.  The relays were fun.  We had to do a black sand sprint with the baton in our hands towards our team and pass it over.  There was time at the end for a free swim, there were big waves and some kids tried to push out further than what they were allowed.  Mrs Wichman had to do CPR on Billie (Billie is not a member of our class, he is a CPR practice dummy!).  Mrs Wichman hadn't been listening so the students had to tell her how to do it!  We all enjoyed the afternoon activities and games along with learning how to dress properly for the beach, what surf lifesavers wear and how to identify rips.  We have great thanks to Lisa, Evie and Sarah who were our instructors for the day.

Art gallery

Our art gallery trip was a good learning experience about ‘Elemental Sculpture’.  One of  the artist that we looked at was Len Lye and he built sculptures with meaning.  Our educator from the Gallery was Chris, he taught us about geometry, how sculptures work and the purposes of building them.  We learn’t about the elements, fire, water, earth and air.  We got Chris to write down what element related to the sculpture that we looked at and used some describing words to relate to it.  After looking at three or four sculptures we went to the classroom and made our own sculptures and we got to choose what element we wanted to base it on.  Chris taught us what the meaning of each sculpture was and why Len Lye made it.  Overall we had a good time and learnt a lot. We came back with our own sculpture.
